User Experience Design

Atelier Leyla Website

Project Overview

Atelier Leyla is a website where we sell sustainable clothing for women. We pride ourselves in being a slow fashion company, using deadstock fabrics that were imported from Europe by other designers. Our garments are made to order which decreases textile waste.

Our goal is to create sustainable clothing that can be more assessable to people.

My Role & Responsibilities

My role in this project is the lead UX designer & UX researcher for Atelier Leyla. My responsibilities for the Atelier Leyla website include design, user research, iterating designs, wireframing, lo-fi prototyping, and hi-fi prototyping.

One assumption that I had going into the research was that the user flow would be straightforward and of course, that changed afterward when I got insight into how other people may go about using an app.

While conducting our usability study I found that there were a few pain points for users when navigating while using our header. So I made changes to the header to ensure that the user flow for the website becomes more efficient and user-friendly.

After receiving suggestions to add some new features that would improve the website's user experience we plan on adding accessibility features like screen readers, image alt text, and using close captions for any video we may use on the website.

Local App

Project Overview

LOCAL is an App for organizing charities or volunteering to help out for local communities.

We’re creating an app where people can be aware of fundraisers, and events in their local communities where they can either volunteer or donate to a cause. We want to find out whether our app has a smooth user flow.

Our goals are to figure out how a user goes through the app and how smooth the process from start to finish is. Based on the results of this study we will be making changes to the app.

My Role & Responsibilities

My role in this project was as the Lead UX Designer and UX Researcher. My responsibilities were conducting usability studies, wireframing, lo-Fi prototyping, mockups, and hi-Fi prototyping.

The user research that we conducted was a usability study followed by a survey. Some of the KPIs we used were time on task, user error rates, use of navigation vs search, and drop-off rates. A few of the questions we wanted answered were How smooth is the process from start to finish for users to complete? Is the app clear enough for users to understand the process of either joining an event or creating one? Are there any features that we should consider adding to the app? One main assumption I had before conducting the research study was that our app was easy to use. After conducting the study I found that some users thought that the app could have some more features.

After the usability study I found that there were three main pain points for users which were typography, a new feature where people can select what job is needed, and an “upcoming events” feature .

There are many people who want to help out their local communities but may not know when or where upcoming fundraisers are being held. With our app and website people can more easily be apart of their communities.

In this project I learned that there are apps where you’re able to donate to international causes but not for smaller local communities. I think both types of apps are needed for people to be able to help out others.

La Rosette Bakery Website

Project Overview

We are creating a bakery website for customers to order in advance. This way they can skip in-store lines and can solely pick up their order. This would also make placing large orders more efficient for other customers since the lines won’t be held up.

My Role & Responsibilities

My role in this project is the lead UX Designer and UX Researcher. My responsibilities consisted of wireframing, user research, conducting interviews, iterating designs, and prototyping.

Our users tend to have busy schedules and need an efficient way of ordering desserts.

The La Rosette website will let users order desserts which will affect users who are tight on time or have large orders by ordering online they will save time. We will measure our effectiveness by keeping records of users' previous orders.

Figuring out if our website is efficient and a smooth online ordering experience for our users. Find out if creating an app would be a good addition to the website. The type of research we conducted was a remote session usability study & surveys. An assumption we had was that our user flow was straightforward but we learned quickly after the first round of user testing that it wasn’t the case and that there was still work to be done. The user flow was not straightforward and clear for 3 out of 5 participants. Participants found the navigation of the website difficult. 2 out of 5 participants found that some of the text sizes of too large for the desktop screen.

I learned that continuous iterations are important to creating a good user experience and that the first design you come up with is never perfect from the start. I would hope that the designs of projects I have worked on will improve the user experience for people.  Our next steps are to conduct another usability study session in order to see if there are any other improvements to be made. As well as continue the ideation phase and see if there are any new design features to add.

Flora & Fauna App

Project Overview

Flora & Fauna is a florist app where customers are able to order premade bouquets or can customize a bouquet. The customer can then have the bouquet delivered to either their address or to someone else's address depending on if it’s a gift.

My Role & Responsibilities

My role in the project is the lead UX designer & UX researcher for Flora & Fauna. My responsibilities for this project are: user research, wireframing, as well as prototyping.

We conducted a usability study followed by a survey. One assumption that I had going into the research was that the user flow would be straightforward and of course that changed afterwards when I got insight into how other people may go about using an app. When conducting our first usability study we found that users needed a shopping cart icon on the top banner and also found that the smaller text boxes were difficult to read. We made these changes in our mockups. In the second usability study we found that users want to be able to select a date and time. So adding a page for a calendar would be a good addition to our app.

A accessibility consideration that has been applied to our app is whether users are able to read the text. We ensured that the colour palette we used is up to WCAG standards. We plan on adding a screen reader and a screen magnifier for those with trouble reading.

The flora & Fauna app was created to make ordering bouquets as easy and efficient for customers. A quote from a participant during our usability study: “The app was easy to use and I would definitely use it again to order bouquets in the future.” What I have learned while creating the Flora & Fauna app is that as a designer we will always have to iterate on our designs before and after testing the product.
